Hugo Chavez is an antisemite?
I stumbled on something remarkable over at the Sänd mina rötter regn blog:
This is old, but Venezuela's president, communist idol and "dictator-hugger"Hugo Chavez obviously made a bizarre statement. He said the following on Christmas Eve:
The world offers riches to all, but the descendants of a minority, descendants of the minority who crucified Christ, descendants of those who threw out Bolivar from here [...] A minority who acquired the wealth of the world, a minority who acquired the gold, the minerals, the silver, waters, petrolium and have concentrated the wealth in the hands of few: less than 10% of the world's population is the owner of 50% of the wealth.
This quote may look strange, but I just roughly translated it with Babelfish and then fixed a few things afterwards. If you are familiar with the Spanish language and you want to read exactly what he said, please check this PDF document from the Venezuelan government's official site out (page 18).
Well, interpret it as you wish - I think it sounds really scary and antisemitic. I wonder how his Swedish fans in the Socialdemocratic Party's local division in Tomtebo will react. By the way, please check the amusing poll on their official site out: "Should our party exclude social liberals?". Thanks to JohanC who found this and posted it in the comments at the blog post at Sänd mina rötter regn.
Now that I am talking about this: Latin America really makes me sad, with its deep social inequalities, undemocratic culture and the corrupt political landscape. Many people think that populists like Chavez or Morales, or even dictators like Castro, offer a solution to the problems, but I (surprise, surprise) disagree. On the other hand the Latin American right wing is often worse. I will write more on this topic later when I have more time.
By the way... I have a feeling that this was the most enjoying thing that happened to some blind right wing bloggers this far in 2006...
